Sixth Grade Math
Family Math lessons are for the entire family so you strengthen family ties while learning together! These activities help your child to see math as more than just a worksheet by using a growth mindset and incorporating the importance of play and exploration. With engaging questions and open-ended tasks, your child will get excited about mathematics. Family Math activities will promote deeper understanding, number sense, problem-solving, logic, and reasoning. Based upon Jo Boaler’s work in Mindset Mathematics, our Family Math activities help you realize you CAN understand and enjoy mathematics.
Open, creative, and visual math tasks have been shown to improve student test scores, and more importantly, change a student’s relationship with mathematics so they start believing in their own potential. The tasks in CGA Family Math reflect the lessons from Mindset Mathematics. Brain science shows us the following:
Family Math combined with an additional paper/pencil or online curriculum creates a comprehensive math plan. This develops individual progression in skills at your student’s ability level while encouraging depth of knowledge with a user-friendly math experience your family can enjoy together.
*You may use both Zearn and ST Math, with any combination. Zearn uses video direct instruction and ST Math adds in the playfulness of game-based learning.
Our math class goes beyond just learning math… it helps students build a great relationship with math. Math builds critical thinking and problem-solving skills in a way that no other subject can. While some students may love math and feel confident in their skills, others may not see any purpose for learning math at all. Our goal is to create a positive math mindset while students build the skills they need to be successful in math. Sign up for classes.
Individualized learning
One-on-one scheduled help with CGA math teacher
Guided instruction or self-paced
Our engaging math teacher, Mr. Curtis Hansen, will guide the students through our math program using Google Meet several times a week: 8:30-9:20 am Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. If you have Epic one of those days, you can watch the recording later that day or use a device while traveling and sign off at 9 am. In addition, students will practice their math skills through Imagine Learning. This is an exciting program that offers excellent math instruction, motivation, relevance, and personalized tutoring with a math teacher as needed. Mr. Hansen is also available for individualized, scheduled help sessions.
Students also have the option of an adaptive, self-paced math course (that does not include the CGA Google Meet sessions). Self-paced students have access to our amazing math course and Imagine Learning. The instruction through Imagine Learning builds conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills and provides access to support from a live teacher as needed. Mr. Hansen is also available for individualized, scheduled help sessions. Imagine Learning builds confidence in students’ math ability and builds a deep understanding of math, connecting their problem-solving skills to day-to-day life and going beyond computation to true math comprehension. CGA TOP CHOICE – Zearn Math is a top-rated program that uses video direct instruction, including visual representations of math concepts, making it engaging for all students and reaching their various learning needs no matter their current skill level. All CGA K-6th grade students will be provided access to Zearn for the 2020-2021 school year so that enjoy the benefits of this program. Students must be placed at the appropriate entry point for their current skill level so be certain to talk to your ES when they begin. Parents can print the workbook at home or request a copy from the school. (Please order a workbook if you are using Zearn as your main, stand-alone program). Zearn is a complete math program because students enter some of the answers from the workbook or scratch paper directly into the program which greatly simplifies the accountability process.

Saxon Math Homeschool 7/6 teaches math with a spiral approach, which emphasizes the incremental development of new material and continuous review of previously taught concepts.
Building upon the principles taught in Saxon Math 6/7, the Saxon 76 textbook introduces functions and coordinates graphing, integers, exponential expressions, and prime factorization. Students will specifically learn about the order of operations, number lines, decimal place value, how to find the percent of a number, how to round decimal numbers, attributes of geometric solids, and more.
Lessons contain a warm-up (with facts practice, mental math, & problem-solving exercises); introduction to the new concept, lesson practice exercises where the new skill is practiced, and mixed practice exercises, which includes 25-30 old and new problems. In-depth “Investigations” are provided every 10 lessons and have their own set of questions.
The Tests and Worksheets book provides supplemental “facts practice” tests for each lesson, as well as 23 cumulative tests that cover every 5-10 lessons. The included “activity sheets” are designed to be used with the activities given in the student worktext. Five optional, reproducible, recording forms are also included.
The Solutions Manual provides answers for all problems in the lesson (including warm-up, lesson practice, and mixed practice exercises), as well as solutions for the supplemental practice found in the back of the student text. This unique, award-winning, hands-on program de-emphasizes counting, uses visualization of quantities, and provides strategies and visual pictures for learning the facts. Understanding and problem solving are emphasized throughout the curriculum. The primary learning tool is the AL Abacus, a specially designed two-sided abacus that is both kinesthetic and visual. The AL Abacus is grouped in fives and tens for quick recognition of quantities. The second side of the AL Abacus teaches place value to the thousands. Children develop visual strategies as they use this manipulative. Practice is provided with math card games, minimizing review worksheets and eliminating stressful flash cards. These games provide interesting and varied repetition that is needed for the automatic responses to the facts.
