Eighth Grade Math

Canyon Grove Math

Our math class goes beyond just learning math… it helps students build a great relationship with math. Math builds critical thinking and problem-solving skills in a way that no other subject can. While some students may love math and feel confident in their skills, others may not see any purpose for learning math at all. Our goal is to create a positive math mindset while students build the skills they need to be successful in math and to help them learn to solve problems in all areas of their lives.

Our Middle School math program contains the following:

  • Individualized learning
  • In-person and virtual classes
  • Live tutoring through Imagine Learning
  • One-on-one scheduled help with CGA math teacher
  • Guided instruction or self-paced

Guided Instruction

Our engaging math teacher will guide the students through our math program using Zoom on Thursdays and In-person on Tuesdays. In addition, students will practice their math skills through Imagine Learning. This is an exciting program that offers excellent math instruction, motivation, relevance, and personalized tutoring with a math teacher as needed. The Math teacher is also available for individualized, scheduled help sessions all throughout the week. There are also linked resources available in the Google Classroom.

Self-Paced

Students also have the option of an adaptive, self-paced math course (that does not include the CGA Google Meet sessions). Self-paced students have access to our amazing math course and Imagine Learning. The instruction through Imagine Learning builds conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills and provides access to support from a live teacher as needed. The Math teacher is also available for individualized, scheduled help sessions. Imagine Learning builds confidence in students’ math ability and builds a deep understanding of math, connecting their problem-solving skills to day-to-day life and going beyond computation to true math comprehension.

ST Math (Online)

Don’t settle for mere digitized math drills. ST Math is a visual instructional program that builds a deep conceptual understanding of math through rigorous learning and creative problem solving to engage, motivate and challenge PreK-8 students toward higher achievement. Every student deserves his or her own personal journey toward math mastery. With ST Math, students progress at their own pace and engage with a unique series of animated puzzles. Students use the immediate and informative feedback to adjust their thinking while solving a problem. Parents have access to a simple-yet-powerful, built-in reporting system to monitor learning and quickly identify the instructional needs of each student.

Saxon Algebra 1/2

Pre Algebra Home Study Kit includes the hardcover student text, softcover answer key, and softcover test booklet. Containing 123 lessons, this text is the culmination of pre-algebra mathematics, a full pre-algebra course and an introduction to geometry and discrete mathematics. Some topics covered include Prime and Composite numbers; fractions & decimals; order of operations, coordinates, exponents, square roots, ratios, algebraic phrases, probability, the Pythagorean Theorem and more. Utilizing an incremental approach to math, your students will learn in small doses at their own pace, increasing retention of knowledge and satisfaction! Learn More

NeedsAnswer Key, Student Manual (Textbook), Test Forms.

Notes: Saxon Math has a very dry presentation.  The pages are devoid of color, but it has lots of reviews and is a well-respected curriculum.   Placement Test

Math-U-See Algebra 1

Graphing, simultaneous equations, exponents, polynomials, unit multipliers, and more.

The Honors pages provided with our upper-level courses (Pre-Algebra through Calculus) are intended to extend the concepts presented in the lessons, much as the Application and Enrichment pages in the Greek Letter levels, and are not designed to meet the requirements of a high school “Honors”-level course. These additional activities serve to round out a student’s understanding of the main concepts already being taught. Even if a student completes all of these pages, the designation “Honors” cannot be added to the course description on the student’s transcript. Learn More

Needs Student Workbook, Teacher Manual & Instructional DVD, Integer Block Set & Decimal Inserts.

Notes:  Math-U-See is great for hands on learners.  It can be quite repetitive and doesn’t contain many reviews.  Placement Test

Understanding Geometry

The successful completion of Understanding Geometry will virtually guarantee a student’s success in high school geometry. Although the geometric concepts of perimeter, area, and volume are taught piecemeal from elementary school through middle school, too many students enter high school without the skills and knowledge to succeed in high school geometry. Unfortunately, middle school students get a very little education on the properties of parallelograms and the tools needed to succeed at doing geometric proofs. A result is a high number of students who struggle with high school geometry and standardized testing. Geometry is a fundamental subject in high school standardized testing.

This book teaches students an understanding of the reasoning behind the properties taught in geometry–instead of merely asking them to memorize them. Students are also taught the basics of geometric proofs and coordinate geometry in a way middle school students can understand. A glossary of terms that every student must master is included. This book can be used as a classroom textbook in Grades 7, 8, or 9 (usually over a two-year period). In many high schools, this book can also be used as a one-year high school geometry course. This book follows the National Math Standards in mathematics but it goes further. Learn More

NOTE:  It is our recommendation that students complete Understanding Algebra I before attempting Understanding Geometry Learn More

Dreambox is adaptive, personalized instruction.  Learn More

Notes: Not a complete curriculum, but a fun supplement.  Lots of games.  Can be difficult to transfer skills to paper if used alone.
