Seventh Grade Math

Canyon Grove Math

Our math class goes beyond just learning math… it helps students build a great relationship with math. Math builds critical thinking and problem-solving skills in a way that no other subject can. While some students may love math and feel confident in their skills, others may not see any purpose for learning math at all. Our goal is to create a positive math mindset while students build the skills they need to be successful in math and to help them learn to solve problems in all areas of their lives.

Our Middle School math program contains the following:

  • Individualized learning
  • In-person and virtual classes
  • Live tutoring through Imagine Learning
  • One-on-one scheduled help with CGA math teacher
  • Guided instruction or self-paced

Guided Instruction

Our engaging math teacher will guide the students through our math program using Zoom on Thursdays and In-person on Tuesdays. In addition, students will practice their math skills through Imagine Learning. This is an exciting program that offers excellent math instruction, motivation, relevance, and personalized tutoring with a math teacher as needed. The Math teacher is also available for individualized, scheduled help sessions all throughout the week. There are also linked resources available in the Google Classroom.

Self-Paced

Students also have the option of an adaptive, self-paced math course (that does not include the CGA Google Meet sessions). Self-paced students have access to our amazing math course and Imagine Learning. The instruction through Imagine Learning builds conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills and provides access to support from a live teacher as needed. The Math teacher is also available for individualized, scheduled help sessions. Imagine Learning builds confidence in students’ math ability and builds a deep understanding of math, connecting their problem-solving skills to day-to-day life and going beyond computation to true math comprehension.

Math Mammoth

Math Mammoth Grade 7 Complete Curriculum is a complete pre-algebra program for 7th grade. It consists of two student worktexts (A and B), a separate answer key for each, tests, cumulative reviews, and in the download version, an additional worksheet maker (Internet access required) to make extra practice worksheets when needed. Learn More

The two books (Worktext part A and part B) deal with

  • introduction to basic algebra concepts
  • integers and their operations
  • solving one-step equations, including with negative numbers
  • operations with negative rational numbers
  • solving linear equations and writing equations for word problems
  • graphing linear equations and an introduction to the concept of slope
  • ratios, rates, proportions, and percent
  • geometry: angle relationships, compass & ruler constructions, drawing problems, Pi and the area and circumference of a circle, cross-sections formed when cutting solids, surface area, and volume
  • the Pythagorean theorem
  • probability
  • statistics

Some main features of Math Mammoth complete curriculum (Light Blue series) are:

  • focuses on an understanding of mathematical concepts
  • uses clear explanations, lots of visual exercises and pattern exercises
  • mastery oriented: concentrates fairly long on a topic, with fairly few topics per grade
  • emphasizes mental math and developing number sense
  • very little teacher preparation needed

Needs: Semester One – Worktext 7A,  Semester Two- Worktext 7B

Notes: A great curriculum that covers all skills really well.   Crammed full of information so page layout can seem a little overwhelming.  No color.  A great fit for the student that gets Math. 2 workbooks A & B. Placement Test

Math-U-See Pre-Algebra

Negative numbers, the order of operations, solving for the unknown, and other topics.

The Honors pages provided with our upper-level courses (Pre-Algebra through Calculus) are intended to extend the concepts presented in the lessons, much as the Application and Enrichment pages in the Greek Letter levels, and are not designed to meet the requirements of a high school “Honors”-level course. These additional activities serve to round out a student’s understanding of the main concepts already being taught. Even if a student completes all of these pages, the designation “Honors” cannot be added to the course description on the student’s transcript. Learn More

Needs Student Workbook, Teacher Manual & Instructional DVD, Integer Block Set & Decimal Inserts.

Notes:  Math-U-See is great for hands on learners.  It can be quite repetitive and doesn’t contain many reviews.  Placement Test

Saxon Math 8/7

Teaches math with a spiral approach, which emphasizes the incremental development of new material and continuous review of previously taught concepts.

Building upon the principles taught in Saxon Math 7/6, the Saxon 87 textbook reviews arithmetic calculation, measurements, geometry and other skills, and introduces pre-algebra, ratios, probability, and statistics. Students will specifically learn about adding/subtracting/multiplying fractions, equivalent fractions, the metric system, repeating decimals, scientific notation, Pi, graphing inequalities, multiplying algebraic terms, the Pythagorean Theorem, the slope-intercept form of linear equations, and more.

Lessons contain a warm-up (with facts practice, mental math, & problem-solving exercises); introduction to the new concept, lesson practice exercises where the new skill is practiced, and mixed practice exercises, which includes 25-30 old and new problems. In-depth “Investigations” are provided every 10 lessons and have their own set of questions.

The Tests and Worksheets book provides supplemental “facts practice” tests for each lesson, as well as 23 cumulative tests that cover every 5-10 lessons. The included “activity sheets” are designed to be used with the activities given in the student worktext. Five optional, reproducible, recording forms are also included.

The Solutions Manual provides answers for all problems in the lesson (including warm-up, lesson practice, and mixed practice exercises), as well as solutions for the supplemental practice found in the back of the student text. It also includes answers for the facts practice tests, activity sheets, and tests in the separate tests & worksheets book.

Saxon Math 8/7 is designed for students in grade 7, or for 8th-grade students who are struggling with math. Learn More

Notes: Saxon Math has a very dry presentation.  The pages are devoid of color, but it has lots of reviews and is a well-respected curriculum.   Placement Test

Understanding Algebra 1

Understanding Algebra I  presents an essential concept and skills needed to fully understand and gain confidence in algebra in a step-by-step fashion, teaching students that algebra is generalized arithmetic. It helps students see the connection between mathematics that they already know and algebra so that learning algebra becomes easier and less abstract. This book provides students with real strategies to succeed in solving word problems by using charts and translating strategies that guarantee success.

Drawing from the author’s extensive experience teaching algebra to many students with varying strengths, this book explains algebraic concepts simply and effectively and gives special attention to concepts students frequently find confusing. Understanding Algebra I also uses critical thinking questions to help students improve their understanding and master the core concepts and skills of Algebra I. Students who complete this work successfully develop confidence in their algebra skills and many even develop a love for algebra and the power of higher level mathematics. Learn More
