PARENT PARTNERS
Our goal is to provide multiple ways for parents to get the information needed to support your student. We do this in many ways, including the following.
A beginning of the year parent meeting where we discuss student and parent responsibilities. This meeting will be held the week before school starts. Parents will learn how to login into Boost to record attendance and see an overview of their student’s progress and also how to login to Canvas, where student course materials are held.
Weekly newsletter from the Secondary Program with announcements and information about upcoming events.
Parent Teacher Conferences in September and February.
College and Career Readiness Meetings with the Academic Advisor each year.
Sharing NWEA Growth Reports with families twice a year.
CURRICULUM, ELECTIVES & SCHEDULES
As a student progresses to the Junior High Program at Canyon Grove Academy, we are focused on helping them be ready to take credit bearing high school coursework and graduate! You can read about the curriculum that we use and the rationale on this document–SY26-27 Junior High Curriculum Overview
On May 1, all registered junior high school students will receive an email with a form to register for classes. The form will walk you and your student through choosing classes and have a place to request an appointment with our Academic Advisor if you have any questions.
Junior High Students will take the following courses and also be able to choose two electives each semester.
Here are some of the elective choices that will be offered either Semester 1 or Semester 2 based on enrollment: Art Foundations, Art I, Art II, Social Dance, Guitar I, Ukulele I, Foundation of Sewing, Theatre I, Passion Project, Choir, Pottery, Food & Nutrition, Music Appreciation, Tech Innovator’s Lab, PE, and Spanish I. (There will be course descriptions on the course registration form.)
STUDENT FOCUSED
As a Secondary Team, we place students at the center of our work. Most junior high students need work on executive functioning–turning assignments in, using their time wisely, staying on task, determining priorities, resilience, etc. We support the development of these skills with the following:
Students will review their NWEA MAP Growth twice a year with a teacher to help them identify their areas of strength.
Students will have multiple opportunities to showcase their work and growth–art gallery, end of year showcase, science fair, portfolios, and community service projects.
If something is not working, we meet with parents and students to discuss and make needed changes. We support the whole child.
As a team we meet weekly to discuss students who need extra support and then make specific plans to provide that support. This can look like student trackers, communication binders, and more.
We support using restorative practices and policies outlined in our parent handbook for behavior concerns . You can read more about restorative practices here.
Students are able to receive extra support in classes that they struggle with via our Intervention Teacher. We also work to support students who are working above grade level to challenge them in their learning.
Students have the ability to meet with our school social worker with permission from their parents. Our school social worker works with students to develop skills to support student success–socially, emotionally, and academically.
ROLES & REPSONSIBILIES
As a Secondary Team we are your partner in education. Together we make up the team that supports your child. As a team, we each have a specific role to fulfill. Here is an overview of the roles and responsibilities of the educational team.
