Board Responsibilities
The Canyon Grove Academy Board is responsible to guide the school to fulfill our mission through our charter. The Board is made up of appointed directors, an elected parent representative and non-voting school administrators.
Board meetings are typically the third Thursday of each month at 4:00 pm. You can attend online (link is on the agenda) or in the boardroom. Parents, students, teachers and the public are welcome and encouraged to join us. Meetings are posted at the school, on the school calendar, and on the Public Notices website. You can review the meeting agendas and minutes once they are posted online.

Josh Daniels
Board Chair
Josh Daniels has a passion for education and educational models that empower parents. He works in the charter school sector helping shape public policy to ensure online schools in America are able to serve students. Josh is also a policy advisor for Libertas Institute where he has worked on a variety of government reform proposals including local government issues and school choice. Previously, Josh served as a senior aide to US Congressman Pete Olson in Houston TX and is also a combat veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom where he served as a Sergeant in the United State Marine Corps. Josh studied economics, business, and political science at Brigham Young University and has a J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center.

Alen Howard
Vice Chair
Alen is a life-long educator, with 19 years of progressive growth and leadership responsibilities within private and public education. Alen is passionate about having exponential, scalable hyper-growth impact on organizations and people, and in helping others find success in teaching and learning!
Alen graduated with a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Arizona State University, and an undergraduate degree in Secondary Education from the University of Oklahoma. Alen is a former History teacher, charter school administrator, curriculum and assessment director, and for the past 5 years has worked in the Education Technology sector (working with some of the largest school districts and consortia in the country on technology adoption projects and Blended Learning programs, including the UEN and USBE on the statewide adoption of Canvas LMS and Nearpod in K-12 schools/districts as part of the Digital Teaching and Learning initiative).
Alen (with his wife, Marilyn) are raising their family of 4 girls (ages 18 to 5) in Draper, UT. They love musicals, watching their daughters dance, sing, and cheer. They are also die-hard Oklahoma Sooner fans (a by-product of graduating from OU and marrying a Physics professor’s daughter), so you can generally find them cheering on a variety of Sooner sports teams. Caleb Cottle
Member
Caleb has been working with adolescents in a variety of treatment settings including Wilderness, RTCs, and Therapeutic Boarding Schools for the past 15 years. After becoming licensed in recreational therapy and embracing the powerful effects of experiential therapy, he decided to expand his education and pursue a Masters in Business Administration. Since then he has had the opportunity to serve adolescents and their families in a variety of roles including Program Director, Marketing and Outreach Director, and Executive Director. This blend of therapeutic and administrative experience has provided Caleb a comprehensive perspective of the therapeutic process for struggling families across the entire continuum of care. Blessed with a wonderful wife and five delightful children, Caleb has personally witnessed the profound effect each individual can have within a family system. Caleb and his family enjoy living outside of their comfort zones and have had wonderful resilience-building experiences in the outdoors, on stage, and living abroad. Together they love to work hard, and play even harder.

Jarrett Webster
Secretary
Jarrett Webster strongly believes that education should be student driven and parent guided. In his own schooling, he learned the shortcomings of traditional education and has since been an advocate for educational disruption. Jarrett is also an entrepreneur and business owner. He is the Chief Operations Officer of Revity Marketing Agency in American Fork. His experience as a business owner and an employer has furthered his desire to prepare students for life and careers. Jarrett received a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Dixie State University and holds a Master of Science in Management from Liberty University.

Scott Morris
Member
Scott Morris grew up in Utah and was educated here. He loves to think about and create ways for Utah students and their parents to find the best methods of learning. To that end, leaving a job as a teacher in higher education, Scott created a private school to explore ways of teaching that allowed students more choice, responsibility and enjoyment. Knox academy was founded in 2016, with a mission to find truths in education and to help communities to find them too. Scott has served both on boards of directors and community councils and has invested the majority of his life to the success of Utah’s students.

Zia Climer
Member
Zia Climer is the founder of a successful travel company that focuses on cultural immersive, educational and humanitarian experiences. She is a long time philanthropist and has assisted in the development of schools and educational opportunities on multiple continents. As a mother of 5 boys, she believes in meeting the unique individual needs of each child and empowers them to “choose to become educated” in everything they do. Over the past 25 years, Zia has played an instrumental role in fundraising and the creation of numerous learning centers ranging from private schools to worldschooling workshops. While serving as a Goodwill Ambassador in Hungary she had her “lightbulb moment” and began to understand the value of alternative education. She began tutoring others in a classical model of education and built an instructive program to oblige kids with extraordinary requirements. Over the next decade she worked for Childhelp developing a sophisticated therapeutic program utilizing a multidisciplinary approach to serve children and adolescents with mild to severe trauma and neglect. Working with the underprivileged and underserved population in both the USA and abroad, she believes the most powerful thing about education is the opportunity to gain it through life itself.

Brett Puterbaugh
Member
Brett Puterbaugh comes from a diverse background in law, business, finance, and education. He currently works for a NGO helping low cost private schools in developing countries. He holds a Juris Doctorate degree from Pepperdine University School of Law, and is currently pursuing a Masters in Instructional Psychology and Technology from Brigham Young University.
Brett and his family enjoy spending time outdoors hiking, skiing, and camping. Two of his children attend Canyon Grove.
